Our experience with prefabricated building methodology allows us to determine this portion of the project cost even before construction documentation begins. At Turkel Design, our team is committed to designing and delivering a custom home for the life you want, wherever you want to live. What makes us stand apart from other high-quality residential architects is that we use the precision of off-site prefabrication to bring predictability to the cost, timeline, and quality of each project. And secondly, we make premium architecture available to homeowners anywhere. One project that we love is Mulmur Hills Farm, located in rural Ontario. The clients selected us to design a multigenerational vacation home for their growing family on a plot of farmland.
"Tiny homes are not the big solution to homelessness that we need"
"We often hear that our homes don’t look like prefab," says architect Meelena Oleksiuk Turkel. "But there’s no reason high quality, good design and prefabrication can’t work together." Mulmur Hills Farm, for example, makes use of thermally modified ash cladding that contributes to both durability and beauty. The designers aimed to use more sustainable materials throughout the dwelling, including thermally treated ash for ceilings and engineered poplar for cabinetry. The founders of American studio Turkel Design have used prefabricated components to create a home for themselves in southern California that will also serve as a "lab" for testing ideas and materials. Using the models and documentation we provide, your local builder will make a detailed bid for the work he or she will do—which will come in two distinct phases. You can easily imagine that site work will be more extensive on a hillside, and that a full basement will cost more than a concrete slab.

We prepare the hardline drawings that define the details of each home, along with those required by the general contractor and the installers, who assemble and finish out the home. Work with us to customize one to fit your land and lifestyle using our systematized design process. Gary, a city-dweller in British Columbia, dreamed of such an escape, but it wasn’t until he discovered Turkel Design and the Dwell Homes Collection that he was able to do more than dream.

We have designed homes for 34 U.S. states, as well as in Canada, the United Kingdom, Israel, New Zealand, and elsewhere. The TD was designed to collect its own rainwater, uses passive methods to self-ventilate, and can be delivered and constructed in almost any location worldwide. Although perched within dense foliage, the home’s construction required that only six trees be removed.

Turkel Designs will also be able to help consumers select and source fixtures, appliances, furnishings and finishes. Support is provided to the builder throughout the whole process to ensure that the home’s plan is followed to the vision of the owner. From start to finish, the company works with homeowners to build a home that is truly unique and predictable while also taking care of the time-consuming details, such as selecting contractors, sourcing appliances and finishes.
Each of the homes is designed with a prefabricated panelized building system that integrates smart design, resource conservation, energy efficiency, and a predictable building process. Turkel designs and manufactures each of their panelized homes and delivers them to sites worldwide, while a local contractor does all the site work for preparing the foundation and finishing and connecting the home. Key to the Turkel Design process is their online 3D model that it creates of the client’s site. A model of the home on the site is then added which aids in helping clients visualize their home and choose finishes for their house. Over screen-share meetings, we guide you to explore your home with 3D digital models and floorplans.
"The joy that the family experiences while preparing a meal together at the U-shaped kitchen island, facing out to the rolling hills beyond, is particularly heartwarming," says architect Meelena Oleksiuk Turkel. While the factory fabricated all the components, local contractors prepared the site and, in turn, built the house, with locally sourced concrete, stone for walls and blackened-steel accents. At MIT, Joel devoted part of his thesis to developing a house-building system that could be employed anywhere in the world. His idea was not to do prefab or low-cost housing, but to create systems that guaranteed more certainty about construction, scheduling, and costs.
